The following protocol was used to capture changes in the food environment, including changes to both retail stores and restaurants. Retail includes changes in availability and type of grocery stores, convenience stores, and other retail food outlets while restaurants focus on changes in availability of limited service versus full service restaurants.
Changes in the physical activity (PA) environment were collected in two different ways. One, the number of available PA outlets offering PA to 3-18 year olds was tracked. PA outlets include physical activity opportunities like martial arts classes, soccer clubs, or dance schools available in the test cities.
Second, we also examined changes in infrastructure that contribute to physical activity such as upgrades to parks, bike lanes, or sidewalks.
